Since the 1950’s, the Young family has been in the “earthmoving” business. After growing up working with his dad Earl, who used his small bulldozer to supplement his farming income, Sam Young wanted to venture out on his own. After recruiting his sister and brother-in-law, the McQueen’s, Young & McQueen was formed in 1986. Jim McQueen, a PGA professional by trade, was new to construction, but as fate would have it, one of Young & McQueen’s first projects was building a golf course. After the golf course completion, the McQueen family opted for the golf and development industry. Sam’s wife Kim joined the company in 1990 and is now the CFO; Joshua Young, Sam & Kim’s son is starting the 3rd generation in the construction industry. The patriarchs, Earl & Betty Young, played an essential part in Young & McQueen’s initial growth and success. Our “extended family” of long term staff has facilitated the company’s growth into one of the premier site and heavy-highway contractors in the Carolinas and Tennessee.

Young & McQueen specializes in Site Development and Highway Projects. We hold an Unlimited and Unclassified Contractors License in NC, SC and TN and have a resume including work on university campuses, state highways, commercial and industrial sites, large housing developments, golf courses, health care and government facilities and hundreds of individual residential sites.

In 2024, the Young’s wanted to transition the business to employee-ownership. The Youngs are local entrepreneurs and have other holdings that were not part of this sale. Young & McQueen will be integrated into Branch operations and will continue to execute current contracts and pursue new work out of the Burnsville, N.C., office. Branch brings extensive design-build expertise, safe and modern heavy equipment programs, and will expand the number of services offered to clients and partners in the region.
